This category engages with the adaptive reuse of existing structures that might be underutilised or in derelict conditions, practices of conservation, rehabilitation and renewal. Whether private or public in programme, works should demonstrate contextual sensitivity, understanding of collective memory and a critical approach to heritage as a shared entity.

Criteria and guidelines

Special criteria

  • The project has to be a rehabilitation or restoration of an existing building located in any city in India, which was previously underused or abandoned.
  • The new building should have been designed for private use or a public activity like theatres, libraries, museums, etc.
  • Participants must submit a maximum of 10 professionally shot photographs each of what the building was before and what the structure is now. These must be put together as a presentation in a PDF format.

Entry rules & regulations:

  • Participants must complete the application in the form of a powerpoint presentation, in adherence to the template provided, and send it to kbda@kohler.com
  • Only powerpoint presentation format is allowed
  • The last date for submitting entries is 10/07/2026
  • Submissions must include sketches, plans, elevations and before and after images of the space (optional) with professionally shot pictures (interiors and exteriors as applicable)
  • Renders are not allowed for submission, unless you are participating in the Unbuilt Concepts category
  • If you are submitting a single project under multiple categories, please fill up a new form for each category.
  • The number of pages in the PDF/Images should not exceed 50. The total file size should not be greater than 20 MB.
  • The project should be described as per the guideline in the presentation
  • The project should not be more than 5 years old (not older than 2021).
  • The project must be absolutely complete and based in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka & Maldives.
  • Projects that have won previous KBDAs are not eligible to re-enter.

Instituted in 2016 as a biennial event, the Kohler Bold Design Awards is a platform by Kohler India, to acknowledge and celebrate truly exceptional work done by Indian architects & designers. The Jury panel includes some of the most renowned personalities in the field of architecture and design from India and abroad.
